Modern Cyber Security in a nutshell

19. December 2022

Overall, the goal of modern cybersecurity is to protect against cyber threats and ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information and systems.

There are a few different definitions that people use when referring to the term “cyber security,” but there is one that stands out from the rest: “defensive measures designed to protect computer data made available to the public via a network or the Internet.” It’s important to understand the definition of “cyber security,” because that’s the one that the industry uses. Cybersecurity is a complex issue that is becoming more and more important as the world grows more digitally interconnected.

What is “cyber security?

The practice of protecting computer systems, networks, and devices from digital attacks, theft, and damage is known as “cybersecurity.” It entails putting in place safeguards and controls to prevent unauthorized data access, as well as safeguarding against various types of cyber threats such as malware, phishing attacks, and ransomware.

Cybersecurity is important because it helps to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information and systems. It is especially important for businesses and organizations, as well as individuals, because increased reliance on technology and the internet has made it easier for cybercriminals to access sensitive information and cause damage.

Cybersecurity History

As technology advanced and the use of computers and the internet became more common, the concept of cybersecurity evolved. Here is a brief overview of the history of cybersecurity:

  • 1950s-1960s: The first computers were developed and used primarily by governments and large organizations. Security measures at this time focused on physical security and access control.
  • 1970s: As computers became more common in businesses and institutions, the first computer viruses were introduced.
  • 1980s: The first personal computers became available to consumers, and the internet was developed. At the moment, cybersecurity measures are primarily focused on antivirus software and firewalls.
  • 1990s: The widespread adoption of the internet and the development of the World Wide Web led to an increase in cyber attacks and the need for more advanced cybersecurity measures.
  • 2000s: The rise of mobile devices and the internet of things (IoT) led to a further increase in cyber threats, and cybersecurity measures had to adapt to protect against these new types of attacks.
  • Today: Cybersecurity continues to evolve as technology advances and cyber threats become more sophisticated. It is a major concern for individuals, businesses, and governments worldwide.

How cyber security works

Modern cybersecurity involves a combination of technical measures and non-technical measures to protect against cyber threats. Among the most common technical measures are:

  • Firewalls are network security systems that monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic using predefined security rules. It acts as a barrier between a trusted network (such as a company’s internal network) and an untrusted network (such as the internet).
  • Antivirus software: Antivirus software is designed to detect and remove malware from a computer or network. It works by continuously scanning the system for known viruses and malware and removing or quarantining them if they are found.
  • Encryption: Encryption is the process of converting plaintext into unreadable code (ciphertext) in order to protect data from unauthorized access. Encryption algorithms of various types are used to encrypt data. For this they typically require the use of a key to decrypt the data.

In addition to technical measures, modern cybersecurity also involves non-technical measures such as employee training and awareness programs, as well as policies and procedures to ensure that sensitive information is handled properly and securely.

Overall, the goal of modern cybersecurity is to protect against cyber threats.  It seeks to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information and systems.
